UNIX/Linux or Windows 2000 Advanced, what's best for you?
Once our Customers have decided what they want for content on their Web site, and the MEG size their Web site will require, the most common question we receive is; "Do I need Windows or UNIX?".
The answer to that question solely depends on what you want your Web site to do, however, we will work with you to determine what is best for you and what will work to fulfill your needs.
We do provide the Windows 2000 Advanced platform, and there's no question that it has a far greater degree of expandability and adaptability in regard to important components, such databases or integration with your desktop PC, however, it's rare that it is required, plus it can cost up to 3 times more than the UNIX/Linux platform.
Generally for most of our Customers we recommend the UNIX/Linux platform to start with, and expand to the Windows 2000 Advanced platform at a later date if they need to provide functions that only the Windows 2000 Advanced platform offers. In the event one of our Customers does require functions of the Windows 2000 Advanced platform at a later date, we can move them over seamlessly with little or no downtime.
Further to the Windows 2000 Advanced platform costing more than UNIX/Linux, there is very little freeware and low cost software additions that can be added to your Web site increasing its effectiveness. UNIX has an endless amount of freeware, low cost software applications, and many other additions that you can download and install on your Web site such as form mailers, hit counters, voting scripts, quiz/survey forms, or guestbook's to spice up the dynamics of your Web site and to make your Web site's content more user friendly.
Nonetheless, the one thing that makes the biggest difference for most of our Customers is having to pay as much as 3 times the monthly hosting fee to run their Web site on a Windows 2000 Advanced platform compared to UNIX, and here at ItsYourNet, saving you as much money as we possibly can is extremely important to us.
One of the biggest misconceptions is
that you have to run UNIX on your own personal computer
in order for you to host your Web site on UNIX platform.
This is
quite simply not true!
Which operating system you
run on your personal computer is irrelevant in making
your decision. This means that if you are running
Windows 98, 98-SE, 2000, or XP on your personal
computer, you can still use UNIX and see no difference
in its operational capabilities. As well, the programs
that you use to interface with your Web site, such as
localized FTP (File Transfer Protocol) clients, run just
fine on all versions of Windows (and even MAC) based
personal computers.
