Lets start by answering the most
commonly asked questions.
What is a Web site?
Well... yes... This is not rocket science to most, however, with 10s of thousands of people signing online for the first time every day, this is a very important thing to have explained.
The words "Web site" are the foundation and fundamental start to many more technical issues, and one needs to understand what lingo goes with what. So with that said, for all you new users joining the other 800+ million of us connected...
WELCOME TO THE WORLD
WIDE WEB!
To learn "What is a Web
site", here you go...
A Web site is where you display your ideas for all to see. A location on the Internet known as an "IP Address", or, in layman terms, a "Domain", or even more defined, the .com, .net, .org, etc. that one visits while online. This space is used to identify you, your company, or simply to reflect your views and freedom of speech. You can have products, services, support mechanisms, and near anything you want to express what it is you wish to achieve.
Your Web site domain becomes one location out of literally billions of others in the global network of computers, routers, switches, and enough copper wire and fiber optic cable to reach well beyond the moon, and return to Earth again.

All of these factors, and
the content provided therein, connect people around the
world with each other, seamlessly, 24 hours a day, 365
days a year.
With your own Web site, you will be able to establish your presence worldwide, and have any information you choose to present available to every user of the World Wide Web.
With your own Web site, you will be able to establish your presence worldwide, and have any information you choose to present available to every user of the World Wide Web.
Why do You need a Web site?
If for no other reason, a Web site is a necessity to function in today's society. People use the Internet to do almost everything from banking to shopping, and information searching to cost saving communication. Having a Web site makes it quick, convenient, and simple for your customers to compare your products and services against those of your competitors, and stay updated on specials you introduce.
Owning your own Web site is
like having a shop or an office within reach of everyone
worldwide. It is the first place people look before they
do business with any company, and if they don't find
you, they will find your competitors, and you will have
lost a sale.
Your own Web site
can present vital company information to a prospective
client, provide an instant avenue to communicate with
you, and save you a substantial amount of money in your
advertising efforts. However, simply having a Web site
is not all there is to it, your visitors will base
their decision of doing business with you just from your
Web site's design, ease of use, and load time.
With more than 85% of the
people on the Internet still using dial-up to connect,
you have to capture attention instantly, and have quick
load time, or your Web site is not going to pull you any
measurable results. The more dynamic your Web site is,
the greater your results can be.
The one most important
reason for having a Web site is it is the only way
for you to build a subscriber readership or database
so you are able to send your product, service, or
specials to people, and have them return to your Web
site again to learn more. This alone, is all the reason
in the world to establish your presence out on the World
Wide Web, and it is how the Masters of marketing online
have achieved their success.
What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is your Street-Sign on the Internet Super High-way. It is the name people will remember when they want to go to your Web site. Like a sign someone puts up at their office or physical business location, a domain name allows you to easily identify who you are and what your presence on the Internet is all about.
The best domain names to select are those that are easily remembered, short and simple, yet unique sounding so visitors will remember it when they see it again in the future. Your own domain name is one best chosen that includes a branding of what your Web site is all about, so your Web site is one of the ones pulled up and listed when searches are being done by all the surfers worldwide.
Just like the domain name we use for the NameServers (NS1 and NS2) for our domain hosted Customers to point their domains to, our main NameServers are NS1.ITSYOURWEBHOST.COM and NS2.ITSYOURWEBHOST.COM. We chose this name because you instantly know that you find a "WEBHOST" at this domain, and just having the words "Web" and "Host" in our domain name helps us achieve higher ranking with Search Engine submissions.
Having a good domain name will help contribute to the amount of visitors to your Web site, as well as increase the amount of visitors that will return.
With domain names being so affordable, owning your own domain will be the most cost effective way to start advertising on the World Wide Web that you will ever find. With the cost of a domain name being $15 per Year or less, your own domain is the lowest priced 'sign' you could ever buy.
What can a Web site do for You?
A Web site is the ultimate presentation tool to sell YOU. Not only does having your own Web site make your products and services available worldwide, it is also what tells people about you and how reliable you are if they are going to do business with you.
In addition, some of the
things your own Web site can do for you are:
- Support your customers and clients by providing an instant avenue of communication and information.
- Save money on long-distance communications with a VoIP or IP Telephony Interface.
- Provide information about products, services, specials you offer, and upcoming events or press releases about your company.
- Your on-line store is always open to people around the world. Your own Web site increases sales while keeping your advertising budget low.
- Create an avenue for feedback and comments from your customers with no paper or postage required.
- Having people 'Opt-in' to an automated newsletter through your Web site will increase your own targeted market or prospecting database.
- Become an information provider, a teacher, an avenue for people to learn or retrieve up-to-date information on subjects that interest them.
- Own a store that's open 24x7 without the need for employees and sales staff interacting with Customers, it can all be run automatically.
But best of all, having your
own Web site can provide you with the avenue to reach
financial freedom and get out from under having to live
pay-check to pay-check in a J.O.B. (a "J.O.B." =
Just-Over-Broke).
Once you have established that you need a Web site to do business on the Internet, you need to choose which hosting package you will need and what platform you need to support what you want your Web site to do.
That takes us into "Hosting Platforms", and the two major server platforms on which Web sites and shared Web hosting environments are developed.

UNIX/Linux or Windows 2000 Advanced, what's best for you?
Once our Customers have decided what they want for content on their Web site, and the MEG size their Web site will require, the most common question we receive is; "Do I need Windows or UNIX?".
The answer to that question solely depends on what you want your Web site to do, however, we will work with you to determine what is best for you and what will work to fulfill your needs.
We do provide the Windows 2000 Advanced platform, and there's no question that it has a far greater degree of expandability and adaptability in regard to important components, such databases or integration with your desktop PC, however, it's rare that it is required, plus it can cost up to 3 times more than the UNIX/Linux platform.
Generally for most of our Customers we recommend the UNIX/Linux platform to start with, and expand to the Windows 2000 Advanced platform at a later date if they need to provide functions that only the Windows 2000 Advanced platform offers. In the event one of our Customers does require functions of the Windows 2000 Advanced platform at a later date, we can move them over seamlessly with little or no downtime.
Further to the Windows 2000 Advanced platform costing more than UNIX/Linux, there is very little freeware and low cost software additions that can be added to your Web site increasing its effectiveness. UNIX has an endless amount of freeware, low cost software applications, and many other additions that you can download and install on your Web site such as form mailers, hit counters, voting scripts, quiz/survey forms, or guestbook's to spice up the dynamics of your Web site and to make your Web site's content more user friendly.
Nonetheless, the one thing that makes the biggest difference for most of our Customers is having to pay as much as 3 times the monthly hosting fee to run their Web site on a Windows 2000 Advanced platform compared to UNIX, and here at ItsYourNet, saving you as much money as we possibly can is extremely important to us.
One of the biggest misconceptions is
that you have to run UNIX on your own personal computer
in order for you to host your Web site on UNIX platform.
This is
quite simply not true!
Which operating system you
run on your personal computer is irrelevant in making
your decision. This means that if you are running
Windows 98, 98-SE, 2000, or XP on your personal
computer, you can still use UNIX and see no difference
in its operational capabilities. As well, the programs
that you use to interface with your Web site, such as
localized FTP (File Transfer Protocol) clients, run just
fine on all versions of Windows (and even MAC) based
personal computers.
The following chart is a quick comparison of the two server platforms.
